GLENIFFER, NSW – A stunning castle nestled in the hills has been named one of Australia’s top historical Airbnb stays.

Did you know that the Bellingen Shire boasts one of the best Bridgerton-inspired destinations in the country?

The Evermoore Estate Castle in Gleniffer scored number three on the Woman’s Day list of the best historical Airbnb accommodation options in Australia where “your regency dreams can become a reality.”

The estate’s current fulltime residents, Rachael Moore and her husband Andre Meyer, say the story behind the unique property is as enthralling as when you first lay eyes on the European-style chateau hidden in the hills.

Rachel and her siblings inherited the five-hectare property when her aunt Barbara Moore passed away from brain cancer in 2021.

“My wonderfully eccentric Aunt brought this enchanting place to life,” Rachael said.

“She transformed a twelve-acre grazing paddock into a magical wonderland filled with stunning architecture, natural beauty, and vibrant native biodiversity over 35 years.”

“Aunt Barb had a deep fascination with astrology, numerology, and feng shui, and you can really feel the joy, peace, and well-being in the design of the homestead and castle.”

Rachael said the castle, affectionately known as Evermoore Chapel, is a delightful blend of cultures, religions, symbolism, and art, inspired by our Celtic heritage and my Aunt’s travels across Europe.

“She was enchanted by stories of secret societies and had a romantic vision of the medieval and Renaissance periods, which truly shines through in the castle’s decor and finishes.”

Some of the unique features include the stunning front door from the Alhambra Palace in Spain and twelve beautiful stained-glass windows from the Kirk in Scotland. There is even an antique wedding chest that once belonged to King Henry VII.

“Aunt Barb collaborated with many talented local craftsmen to bring her dream to life, and the castle was truly a labor of love, taking nearly fifteen years to complete.”

“We still cherish her original sketches and notes on the design process, where she researched European castles, chapels, gardens, and landscaping. Her touch is present in every corner.”

In Bellingen, Barb was known as the town’s friendly compounding pharmacist and was actively involved in many local community groups like the Bellingen Hospital Action Group and the Azalea Fair.

“My husband and I moved to Evermoore in March 2020 when Aunt Barb became very ill. One of her wishes was for us to look after Evermoore, so we packed up our lives, left our jobs in Sydney, and made the move to beautiful Bellingen.”

“It was quite a challenge at first—a big change for both of us—but we worked tirelessly to understand the land and all the quirks of the castle. We love everything about Evermoore—not just the castle and homestead but also the incredible nature surrounding us. This area is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Australia.”

Rachael said her favorite feature of Evermoore is the 250 meters of Never Never River frontage.

Rachel and Andre have run the property as a bed and breakfast while they live in the homestead just up from the castle. Both are yoga teachers and also host wellness retreats and community gatherings.

“We’re thrilled to have recently won two Travelers’ Choice Awards through Booking.com with our almost perfect score.”

“Guests do love how unique their experience is compared to anything they’ve encountered before. Our Great Hall features a massive walnut dining table that seats up to 20 people, making it a perfect spot for gatherings and celebrations.”

Rachael’s plans for the future of the Evermoore Estate are only short term as the family have decided to put the property up for sale. It did pass in at an auction on April 10 and remains for sale through Ray White in Dorrigo for an undisclosed price.

“The legacy of Evermoore is ready to be passed on to new owners who will make it their forever home. We’re excited to see who will continue Aunt Barb’s dream and cherish this extraordinary place,” Rachael said.
