Call to stop logging in Gladstone-Viewmont

Bellingen Environment Centre Inc (BEC) is calling for logging to be stopped in the Gladstone-Viewmont harvest plan until surveys are undertaken.

The BEC is deeply concerned about the failure of Forest Corporation NSW to survey Rainforest Senna. BEC explained that this plant is under a Species-Specific Condition under the CIFOA which requires surveys during Spring and Summer when the plant is flowering. This is required to ensure plants that are detected, are provided a 20m exclusion/ protection zone.

Ecologists Bower Bush Works and Citizen Science group, Forest Ecology Alliance (FEA) and have been conducting surveys in Gladstone_Viewmont harvest plan.

“Gladstone State Forest is absolutely prime habitat for Gliders,” said De Marko from FEA.

“During recent nocturnal surveys threatened species such as 2 Greater Gliders and 2 Yellow Bellied Gliders and one Masked Owl were recorded.”

“There are plenty of old growth hollow bearing trees within the proposed harvesting plan. Bower Bush Works, Bellingen Environment Centre and Forest Ecology Alliance are united in calling for logging to be stopped as surveys are incomplete.”
