Bellingen, NSW – Local artist Fi McAulay brings the vibrant history of Portugal and Spain to life with her new exhibit of miniature and small works, featuring stunning recreations of Iberian ceramics and intricate azulejos.
A new painting exhibit by Fi McAulay of miniatures and small works features treasures from the Iberian Peninsula. Fi travelled in Portugal and Spain last year and was enchanted by the history of ceramics and azulejos [wall tiles], particularly in Portugal. The capital Lisbon has a National Tile Museum set in an old sprawling Convent displaying thousands of tiles and mosaic panels, centuries old. You can trace the history of tiles from the Romans, through the Moorish influence right up to now. And of course, the ceramics are similarly stunning, also dating from Roman times and a broad array of influences especially from trade with the Orient. Situated in the central city of Coimbra, and built atop the oldest Roman foundations in Portugal, is the ‘Machado’, the National History Museum, one of the most impressive in Europe. Fi, who also facilitates mosaic workshops, has recreated in paint, a selection of treasured objects. The show is on at STATE Of EMBRACE, cnr Hyde and Church Streets, Bellingen, open 7 days.
