BELLINGEN – In a display of pure spirit and unconventional flair, the Baalijin Gliders, Bellingen’s own ultimate frisbee squad, soared to an undefeated triumph at their inaugural tournament in Byron Bay.
The Baalijin Gliders, Bellingen’s homegrown ultimate frisbee team, have taken flight in spectacular fashion, claiming an undefeated victory at their first-ever tournament in Byron Bay. In two tightly contested matches, the Gliders overcame Gold Coast 6–4 and hometown favourites Byron 6–5, earning the top spot in a gripping showdown that had frisbees flying, hearts racing, and the crowd cheering as the Bellingen players overcame the odds with their fun, unconventional style of play.
The team was formed in 2020 by Ben Lewis and after a brief hiatus was reignited in 2023 by Nathaniel Greenacre. Both were heavily involved in the Byron Bay tournament, alongside 8 other enthusiastic players from Bellingen. What the underdogs lacked in strategy and experience, they made up for in teamwork, clever play, and heart. As one jubilant player put it: “It’s about the spirit, the laughs, and seeing how far we’ve come as a team.”
Ultimate frisbee is a team sport that combines the passing rules of netball and the scoring of American football. All of which is performed with a flying disc that, many readers may recall, has a mind of its own at times.
Their new jerseys – supplied by sponsor Moxie Wholistic Health – made their debut at the tournament, featuring designs inspired by Bellingen’s local flora, fauna, geography, and cultural heritage. The team name, Baalijin, was chosen with guidance from a local Aboriginal Elder to honour the valley’s rich Indigenous history.
Despite challenges over the years like Covid lockdowns and La Nina’s soggy tantrums, the Gliders have built a committed core of around 20 players who meet every Tuesday for fun, inclusive games open to women, men, girls and boys. Whether you’re a seasoned thrower or a curious newcomer, you’re welcome to join the flight. Just be ready to run, laugh and play.
