C.ex Urunga Golf Club has seen a bustling fortnight of golf action, with competitions played on dry fairways and testing greens. Members and visitors alike turned out in strong numbers.

Kevin Sanford kicked off the period in style with a commanding 38-point win in the Medley Stableford on Thursday, 3 July. He was followed by Anthony Shields on 35 points and Graham Hooper with 34. John Piggott and David Baldock each secured a ball for their efforts, both finishing on 31. Nearest to the Pin prizes that day went to David McGilvray on the 3rd and Brett Bosbach on the 18th.

The ladies took to the course the following day for the opening round of the Parish Cup, with Lyn Bastick producing a stellar round of 36 points. Lisa Guest, Deborah Lindsay, and Rose Wiblin all finished with 31 points, with Guest edging Lindsay on a countback and Wiblin finishing in fourth.

Saturday’s Monthly Medal on 5 July proved highly competitive. Maurie Tate from Bellingen Golf Club claimed top spot on countback with a nett 71, narrowly beating Urunga’s John Leahy who also carded 71. Roger Young followed close behind with the same score. Nearest to the Pins were claimed by Arthur Hassett (3rd), Kim Michelsen (9th), Col Osland (12th and 18th), and David McBaron (16th), highlighting the sharp shooting across the board.

Monday, 7 July was a particularly special occasion as members gathered for the Ralph Dunn Memorial Day. Kevin Sanford again led the charge, winning the event with a strong 37 points. Bruce Parker and Warren Rawlings followed closely behind on 35 points, with Parker edging Rawlings on countback. Bruce also provided the highlight of the day — a spectacular hole-in-one on the 18th. Nearest to the Pin prizes were awarded to John Davis on the 3rd and Sanford again on the 9th. Warren Rawlings claimed the longest putt on the 8th/17th, while Lawrie Renshall took out the traditional Bradman’s Prize.

On Wednesday, 9 July, Jenny Tierney posted a solid 33 points to take out the Ladies Stableford competition. Anne Cameron followed with 27, while Karen Kennedy and Rose Wiblin both managed 25 points, Kennedy sneaking ahead on countback.

Thursday’s Medley Stableford saw John Leahy return to the winner’s circle with a score of 36. Peter Jenson was second on 32, with Peter Wood rounding out the top three with 31 points. Nearest to the Pins were taken out by John Anselmi (9th), Garry Swain (16th), and Anthony Shields (18th).

The Ladies Monthly Medal was held on Friday, 11 July, with Lyndee Thomas taking the title with a nett 75. Marie Cooper followed with a score of 78. Donna Navin, Lois Milham, and a close group of players all carded scores in the low 80s in a tightly contested field.

Capping off the fortnight, Saturday’s Medley Stableford on 12 July saw Anthony Campbell lead the pack with a brilliant 40-point round. Rex Anthony followed with 38, and Kevin Sanford again featured on the podium, scoring 37 to claim third place on countback from Bob Morrison. Brett Hoffman added a solid 36, while John Greensill from Bellingen returned 35. The highlight of the day came from Adam Crotty, who carded an eagle on the 11th to earn a “Great Score” award and six balls.

A big thank you goes to the dedicated green staff, whose hard work and attention to detail have the course looking and playing beautifully following the recent rain. From hole-in-ones to eagles and everything in between, it’s been a wonderful fortnight at C.ex Urunga Golf Club.
