C.ex Urunga Golf Club enjoyed a bustling fortnight of competition, where a mix of local talent and visiting players produced some close finishes and standout individual performances. Visitors from clubs, including Nambucca Heads to Safety Beach and as far away as Scone, made their presence known, pushing the locals and keeping the leaderboards lively.
Kicking things off on Monday, 14 July, Bruce Parker posted a commanding 40 points in the Men’s Veterans Stableford to take the win, followed closely by John Davis with 38 and Arthur Hassett on 35. Grant Cardow claimed nearest the pin on the 3rd, while Anthony Shields took out the 9th
Twelve players competed in the Ladies Monthly Stableford Bonanza on Wednesday 16 July, where Shirley Shelton topped the field with a steady 36 points. Anne Cameron edged out Jenny Tierney for second on countback after both finished on 33points.
Thursday’s Medley Stableford on 17 July was hotly contested, with John Piggott claiming victory on 39 points. He was followed by Warren Rawlings on 37 and Garry Swain with 35 on countback. Nearest the pins were awarded to Joe Street (9th), Roger Young (16th), and John Leahy (18th).
The Ladies Captain v. Vice-Captain Stableford was held Friday 18 July, with Donna Navin leading the way on 30 points, trailed by Jenny Tierney (28) and Lois Milham (26).
A strong field of 42 turned out for the Medley 2-Person Ambrose on Saturday 19 July. The pairing of Adam Crotty and David Tully took line honours with an excellent nett score of 60. Michael Alsleben from Scone teamed with local Dale Jenner to finish on 65, with David McBaron and Warren Rawlings rounding out the top three with a nett 65.75. Nearest the pins went to Bob Archibald (3rd), David King (9th and 16th), Michael Alsleben (12th), and David McBaron (18th).
Alsleben continued his good form into Monday 21 July, winning the Veterans Stableford with 37 points. John Davis and Andrew O’Keeffe both carded 34, with Davis taking second on countback. Alsleben and Tom Faulkner picked up nearest the pins on the 3rd and 9th respectively.
In the Ladies Stableford on Wednesday 23 July, Jeanette Robinson emerged on top with 32 points on countback over Helen Trist. Lyn Bastick placed third with 30.
More visiting success came on Thursday 24 July, with Nambucca Heads’ John Buganey winning the Medley Stableford with 39 points. Geoff Rackham finished second on 34, and Peter Jenson rounded out the podium with 33 on countback. Jenson also claimed two nearest the pins on the 3rd and 12th, with Joe Street (9th) and Douglas Springall (18th) collecting the others.
The fortnight concluded on Friday 25 July with Round 2 of the Ladies Parish Cup. Anne Cameron continued her consistent play to win with 32 points. Donna Navin edged out Sue Partridge from Walcha on a countback after both scored 29 points for second and third place respectively.
Unfortunately, Saturday’s competition was cancelled as the rain kept most players from attending.
