The Coffs City United Lionesses pulled off a stunning victory defeating league leaders Urunga Raiders on Monday night (4 August) in the HIT105.5 Women’s Premier League at the Coffs Coast Synthetics.
The precious three points means that the Lionesses are joint top of the league on 26 points alongside Urunga and the Boambee Eagles.
However, Urunga have two games in hand on the Lionesses and Boambee have one game in hand.
In a rivalry that has long leaned in Urunga’s favour, the Lionesses flipped the script with a complete team display that could not have come at a better time—with finals just around the corner.
First Half
From the outset, Coffs United matched the physicality and intensity of the high-flying Raiders. Their pressing game and fast transitions had Urunga on the back foot early.
The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Georgia Silvy delivered a precise assist to Maisie McCormack, who calmly slotted home to give the Lionesses a deserved 1–0 halftime lead. (ref 3049
Second Half
The Lionesses picked up right where they left off, maintaining their tempo and shape. The second goal came courtesy of Lily Mackay, who produced a brilliant individual effort from the top of the box—beating defenders before firing home a low strike to double the advantage. (ref 3341)
Coffs sealed the result late in the game when Bella Mackay was on hand to tap in from close range, finishing off a sweeping move and putting an exclamation mark on a dominant team performance.
