Vivien Jones, fierce protector of nature and unsung scientist, dies at 78

Farewell Vivien.

Vivien Jones died suddenly at home on the 7th. Of July 2025.

Vivien had no close family connections and her will requested no funeral or ceremony

The Bellingen community now takes the role of acknowledging her life and contribution to society, without ceremony, everyone is invited to gather for an afternoon of sharing stories and memories.

Wednesday the 20th of August at 2pm. The Showground Luncheon Room.

Vivien will be remembered as strong, Intelligent, dynamic, challenging and determined in whatever she did.

Well known for her beloved poodles, raising mice to feed sick raptors, raising pigeons for pigeon pie and her vital interest in nature.

Vivien studied at the Universities of Melbourne and Monash from 1968 and Perugia University in Italy 1973.

Music, arts, literature, history, sciences and crafts were always a driving influence in her life.

At Bellingen Radio Triple B, Vivien was a Presenter, Board Member, Chair, and Trainer of new staff from 1987 for about 8 years.

As climate change came into focus, Vivien’s attention to the conservation of nature and wild life habitat became her strongest interest.

Vivien’s primary achievement must be her study of Flying Foxes. Spending years on the river in boats and scrambling on land day and night setting up cameras to get her shots. Vivien has made a well respected contribution to science with her careful observations and breakthrough photography of the flying Foxes scooping water from the river on their belly fur and flying up into the trees to lick it off!

Vivien published books of her photography and notations on Flying Foxes and Rainbow Birds. (Rainbow Bee Eaters).

Vivien by her nature was challenging and generous especially to young people to encourage them in education.
