Bellingen pool users are determined to see our Swim Centre thrive. At the second meeting, of the Friends of Bellingen Pool, residents shared their vision for the future of the pool. They see a vibrant, multi-purpose centre, which is open year-round and accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
The September 20 meeting identified significant issues needing to be overcome to make this dream a reality. Restricted operating hours will need to be tackled; pool amenity has to improve and the season extended with pool heating. Poor signage and promotion need to be addressed as these impact on visitor and resident use.
“While challenging, many of these obstacles can be overcome if we work in partnership with Council and the new pool managers”, says Annie Kennedy. “We have identified a range of actions that we can take. And people have already put up their hands to help on the four working groups that will take these ideas forward.”
The question on everyone’s mind, however, is when will the pool re-open? As the new shower and toilet block being constructed is shared between pool and Connell Park users, Bellingen Council has advised that pool access is not possible until work is completed.
Caroline Joseph, who initiated the meeting says, “Like many in the community we are frustrated at not being able to swim locally. For so many people the pool is critical to their health and wellbeing. For most kids it’s the only opportunity to learn to swim. And for swim club members the long closure of the pool means time and expense travelling outside the area”. She therefore welcomed the offer of the new pool manager – Community Aquatics, to share season passes across the Macksville, Bellingen and Dorrigo pools.
Friends of the Bellingen pool aims to harness the energy, ideas and skills of all pool users. “If we are to realise our vision to have the pool as the centre of the community, we are all going to have to pull together “, says Annie Kennedy. “And most importantly, community involvement in the group ensures pool users have a voice in decisions about the pool’s management and future.”
The Friends of the Bellingen Pool will therefore continue to meet with a focus on fund raising, communications and liaison with Council and other groups.
The next meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday, 26th October at the Youth Hub. All welcome. Love to see you there.
