Bosbach, Wiblin Double Up in Busy Golf Week

It was another strong fortnight on the fairways at C.ex Urunga Golf Club, with a mix of familiar names and fresh faces featuring prominently across the competitions.

 The fortnight began with the Men’s Veterans event on Monday, 20 October, where Anthony Shields topped the 27-strong field with an impressive 40 points. Mike Edsall edged Arthur Hassett on countback for second, both finishing on 39. Nearest the pin prizes went to Peter Inskip on the 3rd, Michael Bellew on the 9th, and Andrew O’Keeffe on the 18th.

 The Ladies’ Stableford on Wednesday, 22 October, saw Rose Wiblin produce a fine round of 41 points to take top honours, followed by Jenny Tierney and Anne Cameron, who both returned 39. The consistent scoring reflected the quality of golf among the 12 entrants, with only a couple of points separating the leading half of the field.

 The Medley Stableford on Thursday, 23 October, was dominated by Brett Bosbach, who carded 42 points to win comfortably from Frank Partland on 40 and Richard Warner with 39. Robert Morrison was in fine touch, claiming nearest the pin on both the 16th and 18th holes, while Joe Street and Neil Richardson also hit close on the 9th and 12th respectively.

 On Friday, 24 October, the ladies enjoyed perfect playing conditions, and Cathy Jarrett took full advantage with an outstanding 48 points — one of the best rounds seen at Urunga this season. Karen Kennedy finished runner-up on 42, while Donna Navin secured third on countback with 40.

 The Medley Stableford on Saturday, 25 October, brought together a field of 37, where Jenny Tierney continued her excellent week, this time taking out the overall win with 41 points. David Tully and Mike Raymond shared second and third on 39, separated only by countback. The nearest the pins went to Mike Raymond on the 3rd, John Greensill on the 9th, Garry Swain on the 12th, Mike Merton on the 16th, and Robert Jones on the 18th.

 The following week began with the Veterans event on Monday, 27 October, where Brett Bosbach again featured strongly, winning with 41 points. John Leahy and Andrew O’Keeffe followed closely on 40 apiece, with Leahy getting the nod on countback. Nearest the pins went to Leahy on the 3rd, O’Keeffe on the 9th, and Selwyn Newby on the 18th.

 In the Medley Stableford on Thursday, 30 October, John Piggott led the way with a steady 39 points, just ahead of David McGilvray on 38 and Glenn Anthoney on 37. Bruce Moore was dialled in on the short holes, claiming both the 3rd and 9th nearest the pins, while Garry Swain took the prize on the 18th.

 The Ladies’ Stableford on Friday, 31 October, saw Maria Swain top the leaderboard with a solid 41 points. Lois Milham placed second with 40, and Rose Wiblin rounded out the top three on 36.

 The fortnight concluded with the Monthly Medal on Saturday, 1 November, which drew a competitive field of 29. Richard Warner claimed the overall medal with a fine nett 66, securing top honours in C Grade ahead of Michael Bleakley on 75 and Colin Haworth on 77. In B Grade, Rex Anthony’s 67 earned him the win, followed by Warren Rawlings on 69 and Peter Jenson on 70. A Grade saw David Tully come out on top with 69, ahead of Anthony Campbell on 73 and David McBaron in third on countback with 75.

 Nearest the pin prizes went to Douglas Springall on the 3rd, Tully on the 9th, McBaron on the 12th, and Anthony on the 18th. 

It was a busy and competitive fortnight at Urunga, with strong performances across all divisions and plenty of low scores as the fairways continue to play beautifully heading into summer.

 The Sgt Matthew Locke MG Charity Golf Day is on this Sunday at C.ex Urunga Golf Club, and it promises to be another fantastic community event. With over $500 in prizes on offer, the day is all about enjoying great golf while honouring one of our local heroes, Sgt Matthew Locke MG. It’s a fun and meaningful occasion supporting a worthy cause, and players of all levels — including social players — are warmly welcome to join in what is always a highlight on the club calendar.
