Libraries are not only places to borrow books and use public computers – they are also great places to keep cool on a hot day. Bellingen Shire Council is working hard to keep the community safe as we adapt to a changing climate, and with the knowledge that heatwaves are our deadliest natural disaster in Australia, this summer invites residents to use the Council libraries to stay cool.
Mayor Cr. Steve Allan wants to remind people that the Shire’s three libraries, in Dorrigo, Bellingen and Urunga, are welcoming community spaces that are free to use and open to all.
“With cost-of-living pressures rising we know there will be community members without access to air-conditioning or a way to stay cool this summer,” said Mayor Allan.
“Council wants everyone in the community to feel welcome to come and share the air-conditioning at one of the three Shire libraries.
“Older people, pregnant women, babies, young children and people with pre-existing medical conditions are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat. Not everyone in our community has access to air-conditioning or can afford higher electricity bills so making use of this shared community space is a great option.”
Bellingen Shire Council’s Shire Librarian, Jade Tsang, is proud to be able to support the community in keeping cool this summer.
“Our libraries have a range of spaces to work, study, relax and play. With great resources including books, magazines, puzzles, boardgames, computers and free wifi, there is plenty to do while keeping cool,” said Jade Tsang.
“Whether you want to read, scroll on your phone, work, study or just escape the heat, we’ve got you covered. We have printers and screens you can plug your laptop into to get on with your latest project, and if you are not already a library member, you can join for free.”
