Bellingen Shire has been enhanced by eight new town entry statements across the Shire, each featuring original artwork by local Gumbaynggirr artists and designed to reflect the unique spirit of the coast, valley and plateau.

The signs were officially unveiled following a small celebration event held at the Urunga Foreshore on Thursday 27 November, attended by the project team including artists Brentyn Lugnan and Lisa Kelly, Gumbaynggirr Elder Uncle Cecil Briggs, Ebony James Chow from the National Aboriginal Design Agency, as well as Mayor Cr. Steve Allan, General Manager Mark Griffioen, Councillors and Council staff.

Mayor Steve Allan said the project was a deeply collaborative effort that reflects the values of the Shire.

“This project has been a journey of listening, learning and creating together. We are honoured to have worked alongside Gumbaynggirr Elders, artists and cultural advisors to bring these signs to life,” said Mayor Allan.

“They are not just beautiful artworks, they are expressions of identity, welcome and respect. I want to thank everyone involved for their care, creativity and commitment.”

Ebony James Chow, Design Agency Manager of the National Aboriginal Design Agency was part of the bus tour that visited some of the newly installed signs.

“The tour provided an opportunity for reflection and shared pride in the joint initiative that brought the signage project to life,” said Ebony James Chow.

The town entry statements have been installed at each village, with Dorrigo, Bellingen, and Urunga each having two signs at key entry points, Mylestom one sign, and a combined sign for Mylestom and Repton. Each location features artwork that speaks to the cultural heritage and landscape of the area and has been made from a special material which will oxidise over time giving them character and making the artwork more visible.

Artist Lisa Kelly reflected on the experience of working closely with community and Elders.

‘’As an Aboriginal artist creating this artwork has been a way of connecting with my ancestors and the land. It’s a spiritual experience, where I can express my culture and share our stories.

My experience as an Aboriginal artist working with Elders and community has been a profound and enriching process. It has allowed me to deepen my understanding of traditional practices, stories and cultural heritage whilst fostering unity and belonging.’’ said Lisa.

The project was delivered in partnership with the National Aboriginal Design Agency, who commissioned the artists and supported cultural consultation throughout. The signage structures were designed by Fisher Design + Architecture, with installation coordinated by Bellingen Shire Council.
