CWA launches regular potluck gatherings following community survey

CWA launches regular potluck gatherings following community survey
When the Bellingen Country Women’s Association asked local women what they needed most, the answer was clear: connection, belonging, and accessible ways to come together.

Over 100 women responded to the CWA’s recent community survey, sharing their experiences, priorities, and hopes for the future. The results painted a picture of a community rich in resilience and care, but also hungry for more opportunities to connect — especially in low-pressure, family-friendly settings that don’t require spending money or already knowing people.

“We heard loud and clear that women want informal catchups, shared meals, and welcoming spaces where it’s easy to meet others,” said Kaye Guinness, Bellingen CWA President. “So, we’re starting with exactly that.”

The survey revealed that while most women feel somewhat connected to the community, a significant number described feeling isolated or unsure how to find their place. Environmental concerns, cost of living, and work-life balance topped the list of challenges, but what emerged most strongly was a desire for simple, meaningful connection.

“Women told us they value everything from saying hello and being personally invited, to creative activities, skill-sharing, and multigenerational gatherings,” Kaye said. “There’s no single formula — just many different ways to help people feel they belong.”

In response, the CWA is launching a regular Women’s Potluck Get-Together — a relaxed evening where women can share food, conversation, and community.

The first gathering will be held:

• CWA Hall, 6 Church St, Bellingen

• Friday 12th December

• 5:30 – 7:30pm

Everyone is welcome — whether you’re new to Bellingen, have lived here for decades, or are somewhere in between. You don’t need to be a CWA member, and you don’t need to know anyone to come along. Children are warmly welcome too.

“Just bring a plate to share — homemade or store-bought, sweet or savoury — and yourself,” Kaye said. “We’ll have a welcoming table for newcomers and hosts to help people feel at ease.”

The survey also highlighted strong interest in physical health programs, creative workshops, advocacy on women’s issues, and practical skill-sharing. The CWA plans to use these insights to shape future activities, partnerships, and community initiatives.

“This is just the beginning,” Survey leader Meaghan Burkett  said. “We’re listening, learning, and building something together — a stronger, kinder, more connected Bellingen.”

The full survey results are available on the CWA Bellingen Branch Facebook page. To stay connected or get involved, email bellingencwa@gmail.com.

Everyone is invited to the December 12th potluck — and encouraged to spread the word.

“Together, we’re shaping a stronger, kinder, more connected Bellingen.”
