The Mylestom Tidal Pool is scheduled to reopen on 22 December, complete with new decking, shark netting, seating, and 5 replaced marine piles.
The pool closed in October for essential repairs after repeated flooding events postponed the scheduled work over winter and incurred further damage to the already battered structure.
Bellingen Shire Council General Manager, Mark Griffioen, said the crew has worked hard to get the much-loved swimming facility open for the summer holidays.
“We were fortunate enough to receive $246,575 in funding for this project from the NSW Government Department of Crown Lands through the Crown Reserves Improvement Funding program. The Boating Infrastructure Emergency Repair Pool Program, managed by Transport for NSW, contributed $269,515. Council also put in $140,000 to the project,” said Mr Griffioen.
“Most of the pool’s infrastructure has been repaired or replaced, including repairs to the ladders and support piles, replacement of the entire shark net enclosure, steel bracings, 5 damaged marine piles, the timber decking, bench seats and new concrete cappings on the existing access stairs including the replacement of the damaged handrails.”
“Finally, this project also includes a floating debris boom to protect the tidal pool from floating debris such as driftwood, which damages the structure during flooding.”
Mayor, Cr. Steve Allan has been following the project closely and is thrilled with the results.
“The pool looks fantastic and is so much safer now. I know residents and visitors to Mylestom over the summer will be excited to have their pool back better than ever,” said Mayor Allan.
“I know that the timing of the pool upgrade was a little inconvenient, coinciding with other works across the Shire, but our staff and contractors have worked incredibly hard to get it open for the summer holidays, and should be commended for their efforts.”
“I’m looking forward to spending some time in Mylestom over the summer, and seeing everyone enjoying this wonderful spot nestled on the bank of the Bellinger river.”
