Navigating the aged care system can be a daunting and emotional task.

Few people would be more aware of this than Bellingen resident Helen Funnell, who has more than 20 years of experience in the Aged and Community Care sector.

For 15 of those years, Helen specialised in helping people move into aged care homes.

Helen’s proud new role is as a guide and mentor in assisting families through the aged care system at her new Aged Caring Compass business, which kicked off in January.

“Throughout my career, I’ve seen first-hand how overwhelming and emotional the transition can be,” Helen said.

“I’ve supported countless families through one of the most important and often overwhelming stages of life – finding the right care and support for their loved ones.”

“One of the key challenges is where to start. There is so much information out there and it can be overwhelming.”

“I find that the majority of people don’t think it’s going to happen to them, so they don’t explore it, and then when they do, they are in a crisis mode.”

“A key piece of advice is to explore it before you need it.”

Helen said understanding the costs and what people have to pay for home care or residential care can be a real challenge for families.

The Federal Government did release an Aged Care Guide last year following the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, which found that older people continue to have difficulties navigating the aged care system.

There are also some free services available, but Helen’s point of difference is acting as a personal guide and mentor during what can be a stressful time.

“It is a stressful transition for a lot of people. I know how stressful it can feel, and I take pride in offering guidance with empathy, understanding, and a focus on what really matters – dignity, comfort and peace of mind.”

“What drives me most is people. I genuinely care about making the process easier, clearer and more positive for families who are navigating aged care.”
