Bellingen Canoe Adventures will host a water quality focused Clean Up Australia Day event this Sunday 1 March with three free canoe trips to gather rubbish from different sections of the Bellinger River.
Volunteers can choose three different parts of the river for a cleaning adventure – The Point to Lavenders bridge (30 mins), Lavender Bridge to Fernmount (2 hrs) or Hydes Creek to Fernmount (1 hr).
Bellingen Canoe Adventures will provide canoes, life jackets and paddles and transport to and from the sites. Please bring hat, sunscreen and footwear (mandatory).
Jodie Newshouse from Bellingen Canoe Adventures said volunteers for the Clean Up adventure are invited to meet at Lavenders Bridge at 8.30am for a delicious breakfast supplied by Bellingen Shire Council and cooked by Bellinger River RSL Sub Branch Veterans Organisation.
There will be a Clean Up Australia briefing at 9.00am before canoes and paddlers are transported to their selected starting points.
“We’ve conducted canoe tours virtually every day for the last 26 years, and we find rubbish everyday,” Jodie said.
“We’re very passionate about the environment and take great pride in our river and we wanted people to help us clean up our river as part of Clean Up Australia day.”
“We are putting it on for anyone who is interested.”
“We have never done this. It’s an inaugural event that we hope will happen for many more years.”
You can register to be a Clean Up Australia day canoe adventurer by calling Jodie on 66559955 or at the Clean Up Australia website (event no 64750).
The event is supported by the Bellingen Shire Council, Clean Up Australia and the Bellinger River RSL Sub branch Veterans Organisation.
