The Bellingen Country Women’s Association invited local women to share their experiences, priorities, and ideas through a community survey. The aim was to better understand what matters to women in Bellingen today—and how we can strengthen connection, support, and opportunity across our community. The response has been thoughtful and generous, offering a rich picture of both the strengths of our community and the challenges many women are navigating.
The survey paints a picture of a community that is strong, caring and deeply connected. Many women spoke about the importance of friendship, supporting one another, and being part of something bigger than themselves.
But it also highlights the reality behind the scenes. Cost of living pressures, housing stress, mental health, and the juggle of work, family and caring responsibilities are part of everyday life for many. For some, feelings of isolation or disconnection are still present—even in a town known for its community spirit. These challenges are not unique to Bellingen—but understanding how they are experienced locally helps us respond in ways that are relevant and practical.
The survey also provided valuable insight into what helps women feel more connected to their community. Simple, human things matter most: being invited personally to activities, informal, low-pressure ways to connect (like coffee, walks, or shared meals), spaces to gather, relax and spend time together just as they are. There is a clear message: connection doesn’t need to be complicated—it needs to be welcoming, accessible and inclusive.
There’s also a strong appetite to do more together—sharing skills, supporting each other through life’s ups and downs, and building practical ways to help, from childcare to community activities. There is also interest in more structured ways to connect—such as directories, networks, or shared resources—alongside informal and social opportunities.
The survey has created a shared understanding of what women in Bellingen are experiencing and what they want to see more of. The next step is to turn these insights into action—through activities, programs, and initiatives that are grounded in the community.
The CWA is keen to work alongside local women, organisations and partners to bring these ideas to life.
