Dorrigo company Buchanan’s Landscaping and Construction have begun the first steps on the ambitious Dorrigo Escarpment Great Walk.
A team of local workers have started on the multi-day track near Dome Mountain, after completing comprehensive training in heritage awareness, working at heights and remote first aid.
Contractor Jack Buchanan said he was really excited to be awarded the tender.
“It’s a dream in the making – being able to employ so many local workers, with the majority being young people, is very rewarding and great for the local community.”
Trailworx Australia will also contribute to the project, following a competitive procurement process led by NSW Public Works.
Minister for the Environment Penny Sharpe visited Dorrigo last week to announce the start of works and receive updates on the $56.4 million NSW Government investment, which includes the redevelopment of the popular Dorrigo Rainforest Centre.
“The redevelopment of the Rainforest Centre and the starting of construction of a multi-day walk will support more visitors to the region, more people to get out into nature and create 270 local jobs,” Minister Sharpe said.
“Our national parks are where families make memories, kids get outside and communities welcome visitors. The Dorrigo Rainforest is one of our most loved and visited national parks. Connecting people to nature supports tens of thousands of jobs and drives economic development, especially in regional NSW.”
Showcasing the breathtaking Gondwana Rainforests, the 46-kilometre, four-day Dorrigo Escarpment Great Walk will include three new purpose-built camps featuring bunk huts, tent platforms and communal shelters, offering a comfortable and memorable way to connect with nature.
“This is a transformative investment for Dorrigo and the wider Mid North Coast. By backing this project, we are creating local jobs, supporting our small businesses and ensuring more people can experience everything this remarkable part of our region has to offer,” said Minister for the North Coast, Janelle Saffin.
“The upgraded Rainforest Centre and the new Dorrigo Escarpment Great Walk will strengthen Dorrigo’s reputation as a must-visit destination. It will deliver lasting economic benefits to our community while ensuring our natural environment is protected for generations to come.”
Across the state, visitation to national parks is at record levels, with 65.5 million visits last financial year.
