Some of the Johnson Ave Landcare crew.

In conjunction with National Tree day, the Johnson Ave Landcare group at Mylestom recently held a ‘Learn about the weeds in your yard and area’ day. The display included large photos and examples of many weeds found in the area. Residents could speak to knowledgeable people regarding the weeds, what makes a plant a weed and how best to remove them. The group has been working for nearly 6 years on a piece of land in the village and an adjacent dune area. Members had noticed that many of the weeds they remove are in local yards and grounds in our area, which brought about this idea to help residents identify weeds that might be growing in their gardens.

Also on the day, there were many native plants available suitable for our area freely available for folks to take them home and plant. The morning was deemed successful as many locals engaged with members of the group. Many plants were taken by residents to their new homes. The aim of the morning was to raise awareness and encourage people to join our group as a volunteer. If interested please contact Bellinger Landcare.

We would like to thank Bellinger Shire Council for the information booklets and support, Boggy Creek nursery for their generous donations of plants and Bellinger Landcare for their support.
