Kevin Sanford produced the round of the day at C.ex Urunga on Monday, August 10, claiming the Men’s Vets Stableford with a polished 40 points. Peter Drysdale was next best with 36 points, edging Grant Cardow on a countback for second place. Kerry Cooper, Robert Jones and Kevin Sanford shared the nearest-the-pin honours on the third, ninth and 18th holes respectively, while Alan Titley and Warren Rawlings picked up the other ball prizes.
Maria Swain was the standout in the Ladies Single Stableford on Wednesday, August 12, scoring 39 points to take the honours. Karen Kennedy continued her strong run of form with 37 points for second, while Faye Jones finished third with 36. Swain’s round was enough to keep the chasing pack at arm’s length, with Christine Fahey next in line on 35.
David Baldock emerged on top of a tightly fought Medley Single Stableford on Thursday, August 13, winning on a countback after posting 37 points. Martin Tizzard also returned 37 points to take second, while Brett Bosbach completed the top three on the same score. Peter Jenson claimed the nearest to pin on the third, Anthony Shields on the ninth, Garry Swain on the 16th and Douglas Springall on the 18th.
The third round of the Men’s Championship on Saturday, August 15, belonged to David McBaron, who carded a superb one-under-par 71 to lead the field. Grant Homes was second with 79, while Kevin Sanford took third on 80 after winning the countback over Kim Michelsen. McBaron was particularly sharp around the greens, claiming nearest-to-the-pin prizes on the third and 16th holes. Roger Young took the ninth, Dale Jenner the 12th and Sanford the 18th.
Douglas Springall found another gear in the Medley Single Stableford on Thursday, August 20, posting a commanding 42 points to win by eight. Martin Tizzard and Garry Swain both finished on 34, with Tizzard taking second on a countback. Swain claimed third. The nearest-to-pin prizes went to Swain on the ninth, McBaron on the 16th and Swain again on the 18th, giving him a particularly productive day on the par threes.
Karen Kennedy returned to the winner’s circle in the Ladies Single Stableford on Friday, August 21, scoring 39 points to finish two clear of Lyn Bastick on 37. Lisa Guest secured third with 35, edging Dianne O’Leary on a countback. Kennedy’s round continued a consistent run of form, with the chasing players unable to match her scoring pace.
David McBaron completed another dominant performance in the fourth round of the Men’s Championship on Saturday, August 22, firing a two-over-par 74 to finish four shots clear of Grant Homes, who carded 78. Glenn Petersen was third with 79. McBaron again showed his accuracy from the tee, claiming nearest-to-the-pin honours on the third, while Tom Cornelius took the ninth, Homes the 16th and Wally McGill the 18th.
David McBaron has claimed the 2026 A Grade Club Championship at C.ex Urunga Golf Club after four weeks of consistent golf, finishing with an aggregate gross score of 291 to comfortably secure the title from Grant Homes and Glenn Petersen. McBaron set the tone from the opening round of the championship, following a first-round 76 with rounds of 70, 71 and 74 to never relinquish his grip on the trophy. Homes was his nearest challenger on 311, with Petersen finishing third on 335. In the nett division, Garry Swain produced the best four-round total of 291 to take the honours ahead of Kevin Sanford (294) and John Piggott (296).
Round one of the championship doubled as the August Monthly Medal and provided an early indication of the players to beat. Adam Crotty claimed A Grade gross honours with a superb 75, edging David McBaron and Brett Hoffman who both posted 76s. Kevin Sanford led the nett charge with 71, narrowly ahead of John Piggott on countback. In B Grade, Beau Davis fired 87 to win the gross from Tom Cornelius (88) and Michael Bellew (89), while Davis also returned the leading nett score of 68. David Fahey collected the C Grade gross with 98, while the nett honours also belonged to Fahey with 73.
The championship race began to take shape in round two as McBaron carded a brilliant even-par 70 to move into outright control of A Grade. Crotty stayed in touch with 72 while Homes posted 77. Crotty turned the tables in the nett competition with an excellent 68, ahead of Arthur Hassett’s 69 and McBaron’s 70. B Grade gross honours went to Ross Walburn with 90 on countback from Cornelius, while Kerry Cooper was a shot further back. Cooper led the nett standings with 72 from Walburn and Cornelius. Wally McGill emerged as the leader in C Grade, winning gross with 100 and sharing the best nett score of 76.
By round three McBaron had tightened his grip on the championship with another excellent round of 71. Homes remained in contention with 79 while Sanford and Kim Michelsen shared third place with 80. Sanford produced the nett round of the championship, a superb 68, ahead of David Tully’s 69 and Piggott’s 70. Robert Jones won B Grade gross with 88 and backed it up by taking the nett with 70, while Brett Bosbach stamped himself as a contender by returning the best C Grade gross of 90 and a remarkable nett 67. McGill and Michael Bleakley remained firmly in the hunt for overall honours heading into the final round.
The final day produced a fitting finish to the championship. McBaron completed the job with 74 to lock up the A Grade title, while Homes closed with 78 and Petersen with 79. Petersen won the day’s nett on countback from Joe Street after both players posted 71. Michael Bellew finished strongly with 92 and Robert Jones added a 95 to secure his place on the B Grade championship podium. Dale Jenner produced the standout round in C Grade with a gross 94 and an outstanding nett 70, while McGill’s steady 102 was enough to secure the overall championship.
When the four rounds were complete, the championship honours reflected four weeks of consistency rather than one spectacular performance. McBaron’s aggregate of 291 was comfortably the best in A Grade, while Tom Cornelius claimed the B Grade crown with 363, narrowly ahead of Michael Bellew on 365 and Robert Jones on 369. In C Grade, Wally McGill’s aggregate of 399 proved enough to hold off Dale Jenner (407) and Michael Bleakley (410). The nett titles went to Swain in A Grade, Bellew in B Grade and Jenner in C Grade, capping a month of competitive winter golf and bringing the club’s premier championship event to a successful conclusion.
