The Bellingen Shire community has an opportunity to help shape Council’s priorities towards a more inclusive future, as consultation opens for the update of the Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2027-2031.
The DIAP outlines Council’s commitment to improving access, inclusion and participation for everyone in our community. The updated plan will guide Council’s priorities and actions over the next four years.
Bellingen Shire Council Mayor, Cr. Steve Allan, said community input is essential to ensuring the plan reflects real needs and lived experiences.
‘’According to the 2021 Census, 6.3% of our community need help in their day to day lives due to disability. The aim of this work is to remove barriers for these people. We want to hear from you and what will help in your everyday lives,” said Mayor Allan.
“We want to hear directly from people with disability, their families, carers and support networks -feedback will help us identify what’s working, where barriers still exist, and what practical steps Council can take to make our community more inclusive, accessible and welcoming to live, work and visit.”
Consultation includes a community survey, community workshops, and opportunities for individuals and organisations to speak directly with Council staff. Feedback will inform the development of a draft DIAP, which will later be placed on public exhibition for further comment.
