Learn how to save money and water while building sustainable raised garden beds this Saturday 29 August, 9am – 12pm, at a Northbank Community Gardens workshop.
The workshop offers a hands-on practical demonstration of creating both wicking beds and hügelkultur style beds to get everything ready for the Garden’s Spring Planting Day on 5 September.
Devised in Austria centuries ago and adapted here for raised beds, hügelkultur involves stacking piles of old wood and other garden prunings into the bottom of the bed. The wood acts like a sponge over time, helping reduce the need for watering, while also slowly releasing nutrients to feed your veggies for years to come.
Invented by Australian engineer Colin Austin, a wicking bed is a self-watering garden system featuring a water reservoir at the base that hydrates plants from below. This mimics natural groundwater systems and provides a highly efficient environment for vegetables, herbs, and flowers.
