Local sports grounds receive a chemical treatment as part of ongoing council upkeep between codes.

Bellingen Shire Council applied selective herbicide to the Connell Park playing fields on Wednesday 30 September as part of scheduled maintenance on the sports precinct’s newly established turf.

The application followed earlier groundworks at the site, which included aeration, sand top-dressing and fertiliser treatment. The work was timed for the break between the football and cricket seasons.

A specialist contractor carried out the spraying with a five-metre safety buffer around the grassed playing surface. Erosion and sediment controls were confirmed before spraying began. Council placed signage at both ends of the Waterfall Way footpath, the bridge to the swim centre, the playground gate and perimeter fence access openings.

Connell Park, which sits beside the Bellingen swim centre, playground and Bellingen High School, was redeveloped and reopened in April this year. Clubs were asked to limit training over winter while turf continued to establish. A selective herbicide application was also carried out at the park in January 2025, targeting nut grass on the new sand carpet.

The fields are due to reopen for the cricket season in October.
