The Bellinger River community came together on 25th April to commemorate Anzac Day, as they have done for the past 108 years.  The Bellinger River RSL sub-Branch was established in 1918 at the end of the Great War and has been playing a central role in honouring Australia’s servicemen and women ever since.  This year the service was led by the sub-Branch’s new President, Lieutenant Colonel Emma Palmer, a local lady and officer in the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps.

2026 is also the 100th anniversary of the Bellingen War Memorial on the corner of Hyde St and Oak St.  The original memorial was a sandstone column dedicated by Major General Charles Cox in 1926, and which was replaced with the present granite obelisk in 1992-93.

From the Dawn Service at the War Memorial to the traditional march along Hyde St, followed by the social catch-ups at Diggers, The Fed and the Golf Club the sub-branch brought together veterans, families and locals in a tribute to those who have served the nation in times of war, conflict and peacekeeping.

This year’s Anzac commemorations drew strong attendance from across the region, reflecting the continuing importance of Anzac Day within the local community. Members of the Bellinger River RSL worked for months behind the scenes to coordinate ceremonies, organise volunteers and ensure that the traditions of remembrance were upheld with dignity and respect.  Local school students took part in readings and wreath-laying ceremonies, while community organisations joined veterans in the march through town.

Members of the Bellinger River RSL also acknowledged the invaluable support of volunteers, emergency services, the Bellingen Shire Council and businesses that contributed to the success of the commemorations. Organisers noted that community involvement remains strong each year, highlighting the pride that the Bellingen community feels for those who served, and continue to serve, their country and their people.
