The Dorrigo Boxing Club has continued its strong return over the past few years, rebuilding a proud local boxing tradition that stretches back generations. Originally started by Brian Darby, the club has long been a place where Dorrigo locals learned discipline, fitness, and the art of boxing, with many fighters representing the town over the decades. In recognition of his contribution to the sport, community, and construction of the Dorrigo Sports Stadium - the club’s Best and Fairest award is now proudly named the Brian Darby Award.
At the beginning of this year, the Dorrigo Lions Club generously donated funds to help refit the gym with some new equipment, giving local athletes improved facilities to train and prepare for competition.
The club has been highly active on the amateur boxing scene across Australia, with multiple fighters producing standout performances. Zac Suter has been on an exceptional run, scoring a knockout victory over a solid opponent in just 38 seconds at a Boxing Australia event in Wooli on April 26. He backed that performance up the following week by winning the 75kg League Boxing's "King of the Ring" title at Arena Sports Club on May 2, earning a unanimous decision after an outstanding display of boxing.
This year also saw Darby Gibson make his amateur debut, impressing spectators with a strong performance against a much larger opponent. Meanwhile, Jimmy Day is preparing to make his own amateur debut on July 11 in Queensland. With many others training and improving, the club is aiming to have a skilled team of multiple fighters competing across Australia.
Dorrigo Boxing Club’s momentum continues with a dominating win by Darby Gibson, at Warzone 17 at the Coolangatta Hotel on the 23rd of May. This year we have managed to grow our competition schedule and have regular fights. Our next event will be One2Boxing’s Pro-Am show in Tamworth on July 4, where Dorrigo fighters will once again represent their town with pride.
