On Sunday afternoon the Bellingen Big Band presented a concert of Count Basie music to a large audience of swing music enthusiasts.
The music was of a very high standard, The 3 trumpets were lead by Tim Egan, solo chair by Georgie Chorley plus Allan Marsh soared to the high range their instrument.
In the trombone section, that were roaring at times, Daniel Wall, Issac Faulkner and Luke Gerber.
The 5 saxes Oliver Gee lead and Ether Bruce 2nd alto, Chris Frater solo tenor and Rob Gale 2nd Tenor, plus Jen Bedford – baritone sax, combined to create a lush, sonorous distinct sound.
The Rhythm Section was driven along by the wonderful drumming of Pete Skelton, bass player Stuart Dodson laid down the solid lines whilst Gareth Burglund strummed up great beat on guitar.
On piano was Kiyomi Takayama, playing the parts of Count Basie with great distinction and wonderful soloing.
Some of the audience were experiencing big band played live for the first time, they were blown away as the band ran a range of arrangements from Count Basie’ 50 year career – swinging tunes, bouncy hits, slow ballads to server up a delightful afternoon of listening enjoyment.
Ella Mingaye sung great standard songs to lift the second half, her rendition of “The Way you Look Tonight” was stunning.
Luke Gerber sang some Frank Sinatra hits including one Luke has updated to “The Tinder Trap” a cheeky contemporary take on the Tender Trap.
The Bellingen Big Band has been running for over 25 years providing the opportunity for students and adults to learn and experience playing in large ensembles under the direction of Chris Frater.
