Outdoor area of Urunga Library before the upgrade

The outdoor area of the Urunga Library will be upgraded with a new learning space creating opportunities for education, social connection, and community events.

Funding has been secured through the NSW Government’s Public Library Infrastructure Grants, with $174,000 committed to provide new wayfinding, street furniture, shading and landscaping to make the space more functional and inviting.

The upgrade will support early learning activities while also providing quiet, flexible spaces for study, and reflection. Improved accessible pathways and additional seating at the front of the library will make the area easier to navigate and more inclusive, particularly for families with prams and people using mobility aids.

Concept designs of the new outdoor space will be available for community to comment on in feedback round two for the Urunga CBD Upgrade designs, opening in July 2026.

Bellingen Shire Council Mayor, Cr. Steve Allan is pleased about the upgrade and how it will strengthen community involvement at the library.

“Urunga Library has no existing outdoor activities – with these fantastic upgrades the current program will be expanded to feature outdoor storytime sessions, cultural workshops and art activities,” said Mayor Allan.

“The project will support the upcoming Urunga CBD upgrade and help bring the neighbouring reserve to life, encouraging increased use of the space by the community and visitors to the town.

“Libraries are important community hubs for connection and lifelong learning. We want every member of our community to feel welcome and able to easily access and enjoy the new space. The upgrade will be designed with everyone in mind from young families engaging in play to people looking for a quiet spot to relax with their favourite book.”

NSW State Librarian Dr Caroline Butler-Bowdon is delighted that the funds will enable councils to develop or improve their services.

“Public libraries across NSW are building on a long tradition of supporting education, literacy, culture and recreation.”

“I am pleased that this funding will help to deliver improved libraries for communities all over NSW. We know that libraries benefit people at all stages of their lives, providing free and impartial access to information, and this has never been more important.”

“The State Library greatly values its relationship with the public library network and is pleased to administer this funding on behalf of the Government.”
